Rough night to say the least. Of course I was very happy to see Binx alert and active, but he would not stop walking around and if left alone, hitting his cone into chair legs and walls. I ended up moving all my dining chairs into storage to remove obstructions. I was afraid to leave him alone without watching, so I tried sleeping in the spare room with just him but he kept pawing at the door, which meant his cone kept hitting the door. I gave him some gaba to see if that would help calm him down, but not too much luck. Eventually I had to let him out of the room and he started settling down. Maybe got 3 hours of sleep 😣

This morning, he definitely looked like he was in pain, so I had my first attempt at giving liquid bupe. I don't think I was very successful, he might've ingested most of it. He looks a bit better now, but his pupils aren't really dilated. If anyone has any advice on how to administer, please let me know! I'm aiming for his right side, which had very few extractions, but his mouth is so swollen today it's making me nervous to even go near it with anything.

Luckily, he's still eating and less loopy today (probably from the lack of bupe). He peed multiple times and even had a poop last night. His purs are funny too, a little louder than normal. I gave him 3.50 units this morning, not quite his full dose, which was probably overly cautious. Will probably go up to 4.00 units tonight, depending on how today goes.

Thanks again to everyone that stopped by my post yesterday, I know the thread got very long. Binx and I are lucky to have this community!

Safe surfing and a calm Saturday I hope 🤗

Try it and see how it works. The pro version has two strains of bacteria instead of 1, plus psyllium husk powder. I don't know how many CFU. The Proviable has 7 strains of bacteria. The Renew Ultimate one I took to combat the Clindamycin pills had 12 types.

I'm glad to hear he's home and hungry and eating. All great signs.
Thanks, Wendy 😊 Understanding the number of bacteria is helpful to compare each.

I'm not 100% sure how the math works, but the box says per 1.5g packet (1 packet/day) it's 1 x 10^8 CFU. I tried to get ChatGPT to do the conversion and it's telling me 66.8 billion, but that seems way too high, so maybe it's actually 6.8 billion? My brain is too foggy right now.

Sorry to hear you guys had such a long night, Briana. With the bupe, assuming they gave you pre loaded syringes, it is best absorbed into the cheek pouch and doesn’t need to be ingested. Try to aim for the side with the least extractions as you did. His purr being different is most likely from the endotracheal tube he had in his throat during surgery.

Hope you guys are able to get some down time and rest today, the first few days are definitely the hardest.

Sending hugs 🤗

hi Briana,
I’m so sorry it was such a rough night. These procedures take a toll on them and us as well 🫂
I know they say the buprenorphine is supposed to be given in the cheek pocket. It’s not really meant to be given down their throat.

Of course I didn’t know that because it really wasn’t explained to me when I gave it when Ivy had pancreatitis.
Once I realized (from reading here) how I was supposed to give it, I think I was pretty much done with the medication but, still learning…

Anyway, the other thing I was thinking about is does Binx have a hard Cone on from the hospital, or do you have a soft cone on him?

I think that makes a difference, those hard cones they send you home with are the worst.
I’m hoping you do have a soft cone so as not to stress him.

Maybe put a ? In your headline title to get some answers on any of this questions you need help with. That might attract even more attention.

Sending you and Binx lots of love and healing vines. 🍃🍃🍃🍃🍃🍃🍃🍃🍃
And I hope the next few days won’t be too awful and every day he will start to feel much better.

Thanks, Kat 🤗 Your description is very helpful and reassuring - also, interesting fact about the tube! That makes sense. We attempted another round of bupe this afternoon, I still don't think it was perfect but the mechanics definitely felt better so I think we'll have more confidence with the next one.

He's been very cuddly so far, and improvement from last nights wanders haha. Hope you and Esse are having a good day 🥰

Sorry for the lack of sleep and worry. 🤗💜

Is the liquid flavored? I just add the liquid gaba to Peteys food. Going any where near or inside his mouth will be a challenge for sure.

Glad he's alert and eating! What's the cone for?
Thanks, Laurie 🥰 Glad to have it confirmed about the food - thank goodness it's easy to mix with wet.

For @Tim & Pookey too - the vet gave me a cone and said he needed it for 2 weeks (especially if I can't have eyes on him). To avoid rubbing and bumping into things with his face - now I'm think this may be abnormal?

Hmm. Would be interesting to hear from folks who have more experience. Maybe it’s a vet preference thing? Idk about Binx but I’m not seeing rubbing or bumping yet.

it's 1 x 10^8 CFU
That's 100 million, or one tenth of 1 billion CFU per packet.

Neko never had a cone on for any of her dentals. But other than the jaw bone lump removal, even the worst of her dentals only had 1 tooth removed. You can also get soft cones that might be a little easier on him if what he has is the hard plastic one.

How much buprenorphine are you giving with every dose? And what is the concentration of the liquid? I had one cat get prescribed way too much by an ER vet, and he walked like a drunken sailor until I realized the vet had given me a higher concentration than I was used to. Dosing of bupe is in a range. I've seen some post dental cases on FDMB where people had to tweak the dose.

Thank you for that math, Wendy 😅

Yea, I'm not sure if it's because of how many teeth or their own preference. I have a soft cone too, but they said because it's positioned back, he could still rub his face against things? He does really do that too often, unless he's cuddling maybe.

The concentration is 0.8mg/ml and each preloaded syringe is 0.03ml - does that fall within the appropriate range in your experience?

More math. 🤣 That makes 0.024 mg. I'm used to 0.3 mg/ml bupe and Neko had a 0.22 ml dose or 0.066 mg but she was not quite 15 lbs. It's dosed by weight and is a range. I've seen 0.01-0.04 mg/kg of cat. I'm guessing Binx's dose fits in that range?
