5/29 Esse AMPS 199 - Ketones/vet?

Yesterday's thread!

We were all feeling a little TOO relaxed yesterday so I decided to ruin our day by testing Esse with the ketone meter. Despite having no history of DKA, I have noticed that Esse tends to score a little high for blood ketones when his BG is higher. We've gotten up >3 on the ketone meter twice, but both times he was 1) maybe a little lower energy but otherwise completely asymptomatic, great appetite, still hydrating and 2) negative for a Ketostix urine test.

I probably never would have even known it was happening if I hadn't bought the meter, and I only bought the meter because of the forum, ha. I've done a lot more reading now than I had the last time he was that high, and so many posts say this is emergency vet-worthy, but it's really hard to convince myself to take him when he seems to feel basically fine and it isn't showing up on the Ketostix strip. I also found a few posts on FDMB describing pretty much exactly what we're experiencing, and they all said the problem disappeared once kitty was more regulated.

We're absolutely monitoring closely, though, and giving him extra snacks with lots of water mixed in to keep his system flushing them out. He's lower this morning than he was last night at PM+2, and his BG is pretty good (for him), so I think that's promising. If anything changes, we're fully dressed and have the crate ready to go.

Mostly wanted to write it all out so you guys can let me know if you think we're insane, and so if something DOES happen I won't have to type out the background before giving an update.

Editing to include our various results--he is continuing to trend down so far today.

I absolutely can't comment on what you should do in regards to the ketone levels, so hopefully someone with more experience can come in and answer that. Since it is at least possibly an emergency I'd recommend at least using the "?" prefix and adding the ketone level and "Vet?" to your title so it stands out. From what I understand ketones can become extremely dangerous very quickly, so it's worth at least asking.

That shirt is painfully adorable and I just love the "lick gets stuck on my (missing) toof" face!!!

Might be worth getting another test today. My understanding is ketones can fluctuate throughout the day, and maybe a bad strip?
Good question. We actually got a few--

Yesterday:
AM+5 2.8
AM+8 2.9
PMPS 2.9, Ketostix negative
PM+2 3.1
Today:
AMPS 2.9

I also tested myself (lol) at 0.1 and the control solutions, which read within their assigned range.

We do plan to test as much as we can today, too, ideally every 2-3 hrs.

Gosh, ok so that rules out a bad strip or meter…

Oh I hope it’s not an issue with the ketones! Good thing you are checking, Lauren.
Esse looks adorable in his OOTD, btw! ❤️
