6/29 Egon AMPS 120 - reducing food

Last Post

Hello! Egon now weighs a whole 10 lbs! It's amazing!!! He's usually a very skinny cat and now he even has a lil pudge to him ☺️ For his size, this is really around as big as he should get. I am now considering cutting back his food a little, but I'd like to get your experience and suggestions on how to do that. He is currently eating 4 cans a day. If I reduce to 1.5cans AM and 1.5PM will that throw his numbers off? I can cut back gradually.

First, how many calories on the 4 cans per day? I figured out how many calories per day that Neko should get, Some of the meats she ate were different calorie values, so I tried to average it out over the days. For example, chicken is higher calorie than kangaroo and venison. I used a pet scale and figured out how many calories per day would help her maintain weight. The max calories per day helped me figure out the quantity of food.

With her acromegaly, that puts out excess growth hormone, there was some growth going on in side her. But with the vet's help, we figured out what her maximum weight should be and fed amounts to maintain that. I spread out food over several meals, which seemed to help. Also, the raw food was smaller quantity but seemed to be more filling for her.

Are you feeding Egon just twice a day?

I am feeding Egon at AMPS, +1, PMPS, and +1. So he is getting 4 meals per day, one can at each meal.

Ok, I should probably wait for his acro test to come back and talk to the vet then. How long does the acro test usually take to come back?

Egon is on tiki cat- 2 cans Tuna & Pumpkin 55 kcal/3 oz and 2 cans Tuna Tilapia & Pumpkin 60 kcal/3 oz

So he's 10 lbs and getting 230 kcal per day.

Neko was 14.x lbs. I didn't allow her to get to 15. She had some Maine Coon in her and the vet didn't like her getting below 13 lbs. She got 220 calories on average. But age, activity levels and metabolism can vary by cat.

Why the +1 meal? Typically it's good to space the food out a bit more. If a kitty is a fast dropper you'd give more food before onset to slow them down, otherwise closer to nadir or the low points to help them as they get low. Of course, it also depends on when you are around. Do you have an autofeeder for Egon?

I do have an auto feeder. With a typical end-of-cycle nadir, when would you recommend is the best time to feed meal 2? Or split the meals more every hour for say like 4-5 hours?

Try the meals every 4 hours and see how that works. Still TBD if he will always be a later cycle nadir cat. He could be, but bounce breaking cycles also tend to have later nadirs.
