Lots of updates today!

Pet sitter went well - thank you to everyone that provided advice. I left an example dose for reference and she drew the insulin herself. All went well!

We also went for an increase today. We can't seem to get him to properly curve at all during his AM cycles, so I'm going to try giving him insulin on his right side tomorrow morning.

Lastly, we've booked Binx in for dental this Friday!! It's been great to read all the advice on @Tim & Pookey's recent post. Very helpful information! The vet sent over care instructions and I was very happy to see they're not asking to fast him too long. He normally has his meal at 7am and they said to feed him a small meal at 5am. They've said to give him 1/4 of his dose, but because he's at 4.25 units with still high numbers, I've asked if I can do 1/2 dose instead. Drop off is at 9am.
I've sent them back a bunch of questions, including making sure he'll be the first appointment (reducing the fast time), what kind of pain meds he'll be sent home with and when they'll be doing x-rays. I've also asked them to keep me updated throughout, so if anything major happens, I can mentally prepare.
This has been a long time coming, so I'm excited for what it come mean for helping Binx, but also nervous for the day of and what might happen.

I'm nervous too, Briana. I'm like 80% sure I'm going to go through with our appointment this Thursday.

Let me know what pain meds they say. I looked at the paper my vet sent and the meds they mention are Onsior and Bubrenorphine. Whether that's at home or during the procedure, IDK yet. I think those are pretty common meds though.

What has me leaning towards getting it done is just that the risks of these procedures seemingly only increase as they get older. So, either I get it done now, or he probably never has a cleaning. But, holiday weekend is concerning.

Good luck, I'm sure we'll be talking as it gets closer...

FWIW, Jude had no pain meds when he came home, but he also had no extractions or other problems during the dental.

I’m in Canada, so no holiday weekend (ours is tomorrow) - works out well in this case 🙂

Totally understand the hesitation, especially when it comes quickly! I ended up postponing a dental we had planned in May and it took so long to rebook and now I’m worried for that reason - the more time that passed, how much worse did his teeth get? Can see how the holiday could make things more complicated, if you’ve got big plans or anything. Whatever you decide, you know Pookey best 🤗 Good luck if you do go through with it!

They just let me know that if needed, they send home a combination of Metacam (NSAID) and gaba. Will need to look into metacam because I’ve never heard it mentioned here before.

I’ll post another comment with everything else they’ve updated me with, in case it’ll be helpful! Will definitely keep an eye on you and Pookey before Thursday, and let me know if you need anything! 🥰😸🤗
 
Updates from the vet!

- Binx will be the only surgery, so they’ll start first thing in the morning.
- Pain meds they send home are Metacam (NSAID) and gaba. I’ll need to research Metacam because it’s new to me - does anyone have experience with this?
- They’ll do x-rays before extraction and additional ones afterward to confirm complete removal.
- Once he’s recovered from the anesthesia, they’ll give him a small snack. I’ll provide them with some LC wet food.
- They’re recommending sticking with 1/4 dose and I’m okay with this. As always, better to be too high than too low.

These have put me more at ease. Feels very good to have a quick, yet thorough response.
 
Hi Briana, I don't believe Metacam is used very much in the US as it has a black box warning on it.

I think it is used in Canada more often and I've used it many times before for previous kitties. It is an oral suspension, and you want to be sure that the box they give you says "for cats" on it as it is dosed specifically for them. It comes with a syringe (no needle) that shows the dose in weight. Are they going to do any pre-anesthetic blood work on Binx before surgery? Meloxicam is not recommended for cats that have any kidney problems.

Thanks, Mary! 😻 That's so helpful! Black box warning sounds so scary, but it's reassuring to know you've used it many times before. The last blood work Binx had was end of March, where no kidney issues were raised, but I will bring this up to them so I can understand what their approach is. Really appreciate the insight and knowledge!
