I just want to say an incredibly heartfelt "Thank you" to everyone for their thoughtful, compassionate messages yesterday. I didn't see most of them until fairly late (no notifications for some reason) so I apologize for the delayed responses. I can't tell you how much I appreciate you all. I was obviously feeling really low (as has happened several times in this rollercoaster) and your messages were so helpful.

Yesterday my partner WFH purposely so be with me, and they took over after his AM dose to give him his early-cycle snacks so I could sleep for a few hours without worrying about Xander. First few hour period since December that I haven't been on-call! He was bouncing, so there was nothing to worry about anyway, but still.

I'm going through my spreadsheet and editing the Remarks column for every day to transition the notes to a shorthand as Wendy requested. I've added a key for my abbreviations at the top of the column. I don't want to cut out too much. In my edit view, all of the cells are constrained to 45 x 45px squares; the cell doesn't expand unless you click it to see the rest of the text. For whatever annoying reason, the "publish to web" version completely ignores that formatting and overflows anyway, hence the elongated cells. So I'm going through the old stuff and editing all of the text to work better, but it's very time-consuming, so please excuse the mess in the meantime. :)

Relatedly, as I mentioned in a comment yesterday, I'm very data-driven and like to keep track of every detail I can. The shared spreadsheet is incredibly minimal in comparison to my private spreadsheet. I said someday I'd take screenshots to show how much I keep track of aside from the BG tab, so I did that. If anyone's curious, I linked pictures for some tabs and even dropdown options below (to avoid wasting forum space). Please feel free to skip these if it's not interesting to you! 😅
  • Food Tab - Includes amounts given, eaten right away, grazed on, and when he finished if he grazed. Many cells are dropdowns with pre-filled options for convenience, since I got tired of writing this all manually. Food brand dropdown, flavor dropdown, appetite level dropdown, medications mixed in dropdown, etc).
  • Insulin Tab - Keeps track of dosage, injection location, supplies, reactions, etc. Lots of dropdowns here too: one for his reaction to being grabbed, one for his reaction to the injection itself, one for misc notes, etc. Not visible, but it also calculates a success rate (less needed now that I rarely have furshots 🥳).
  • Behavior Tab - Keeps track of how he's behaving over time. Lots of options in these dropdowns: first half of the list, and the second half of the list.
  • Wellness Tab - Keeps track of nausea, vomiting, hairballs, ketones, etc, in a dropdown of course.
  • Water/Urine Tab - Keeps track of water intake and urine output.
  • At the end of each line on every tab, there's a summary cell. So for example: for one meal, I'll use the dropdowns and enter all typed info, and then in that last cell I'll write out the summary. That then gets copied and pasted into the Remarks column on the BG Tab. Since I don't want my own spreadsheet to be in shorthand, I'm now writing two summaries: the private one and the public one that you all see.
  • I also have a bunch of hidden reference sheets, such as one that keeps track of the calorie content of each food (so that his Food Tab will automatically calculate calorie intake), one that keeps track of the other nutritional aspects of his food, one that tracks his opinion on each food, etc. I can't tell you how many hundreds of hours I've sunk into creating these really complex spreadsheets with hidden cells and calculations to get all the info I want. 😅

That's great news that you got a little sleep today.

Wow, you have been busy! Didn't mean to cause a lot of work, it was more of a comment for going forward. But I do like being able to see a week's worth of data, without having to shrink it so much that I can't see the actual BG numbers. I used to use a log book, as well as the SS, so that if I didn't have time to update the SS, the data was still there. And DH would use it too if he shot/tested. Plus I'd include a lot of extra notes for me too.

It's still interesting to see any data that might impact BG's, like food, vomits/constipation/health, medications. Behaviour is also a good indicator as when they act off, and numbers are off, it can mean something.

For my day job (when I'm not hovering over a spicy cat with a lancet), a big part of my work is helping hospitals design the documentation software that clinicians use--have thought many times how I could totally utilize their tools to document all the many nuances of the cat and better see trends over time.

That's a great resource in terms of giving you ideas about how you might be able to document for Esse! Also quite a compliment that you admire my little spreadsheets given that you're helping design documentation software! 😲😁

Thanks, Wendy! I've been working on it all day, but just now decided to take a break because it's giving me a headache. I considered just having it going forward but then it would bug me. I only got back to mid-April or so. The cells with multiple readings during a low are also causing it to expand so I'm trying to cut out extras to leave the most important in the cell and then put the rest in a cell note.

I'm glad I'm not the only one who keeps track of a lot more! It just seemed like it could be useful, for the exact reason you said. Sometimes the numbers explain the behavior and sometimes the behavior makes you question the reason for the numbers, so it's nice to know. I also just want to be able to answer questions like "Is he drinking/peeing less now?" which I can't do without keeping some kind of record.

Damn, Girl, you weren't kidding! That took a lot of time and planning -very impressive! Love the drop-downs, I've been thinking of using some myself. 🤗
Haha, thanks! 😂 That's why I wanted to share screenshots; I felt like I wasn't able to really express how intensive they were, lol. The dropdowns are really nice when you're sick of writing the same things over and over! So much quicker. I've also really enjoyed using the "Table" feature instead of just plain spreadsheet cells; it looks neater and more put together to me.

Brianna, I'm guessing the items in the pictures (these are in the drop-downs, right) are only visible to you?

I can't imagine this level of data tracking. It's truly impressive.

Now, I have a request: can you make the first four rows of your ss be visible when we scan down the ss? That way, there is no need to scan allllllll the way back up to the top of the ss to view the column titles. I did this on mine, but I have no idea how I did it. But if I did it, it's easy.

Finally, I have two herniated discs in my neck, which have been and are aggravated by intense computer work; looking at all this literally made my neck ache  (sympathy pains).

These are on a different spreadsheet entirely, which includes its own copy of the BG sheet that we share (but with colors that I find less obnoxious lol - here's a screenshot of that if you're curious.). So it's a completely different file altogether.

This has actually been annoying the ever-living heck outta me. I do have the rows pinned, but they won't stay that way for the "publish to web" version. Same problem as with my Remarks column that I capped at 45px; the formatting just doesn't carry over no matter what I do. The other thing that's bugging me now is I decided to make cells with multiple readings only show 3, and have the rest in a cell note. Which show up in my version, but not in the "publish" version. 🙄 Trust me, spending hundreds of hours on this crap made me perfect everything that I could!

Here's a screen recording of what the same spreadsheet looks like for me, and then the "publish to web" version.

I wish we were using the normal "visible to those with the link" sharing option instead of "publish to web." Maybe there's a reason for it, but absolutely seems outdated and breaks half the features that Sheets offers, which is so frustrating. Maybe I'll just update my link to that version, because it's driving me nuts that it won't display the way it's told to.

Now look at the normal "visible to those with the link" version [link removed]. (Not a gif, this is the actual shared spreadsheet.) Voila, suddenly just works. Yes, it shows my icon so it's a little less private, I guess, but at this point it seems worth it.

Re: the neck pain - I don't even have an actual injury and working on these has caused so much neck, back, head pain, eye strain... 😅 lol

Gotcha!

Now I'm wondering...mine are pinned...do they show up pinned for you?

I could be wrong about this, but when I set my ss up and shared it, I recall someone saying that the format I originally had (which was sharing instead of publishing) was not as safe for me. I know nothing more than that. I changed things according to what they told me.

Nope, yours scrolls too. 🙃

I don't think you're wrong; it's probably privacy-related (since technically you can see the sheet owner this way) and/or that some people may not be savvy enough not to accidentally allow people with the link to have edit control, etc. In that way the "publish" version is simpler and more self-contained. It's just also, like, broken.
