5/22 Noogi - AMPS 106, +2 88, +11 104, PMPS 112, +2 85

Yesterday

Further to the Gabapentin chat yesterday... I did not give Noogs any last night and his appetite was back to normal!
Interesting that no-one else has noticed increase appetite with their cat. I'm 99% sure I'm right that it was causing his voracious hunger.
All cats are different indeed!

Hope everyone has a lovely Thursday 😺
Glad you’ve figured out the issue with the GABA, Helen. Seems ECID, or perhaps that dose?
Have a calm day, Helen and Noogi🐈😻🐈

Glad he didn't wake you for midnight snacks! 😁

Have a great day, Helen.
Well, he woke me at 4am as per usual 🤣
He likes me to go with him to his food bowl and show him that he still has food left to eat.

So I count one wake-up as a win, as the nights before it was several, and every time he has cleaned his bowls entirely.

Hope you and Petey are having a good morning!

So cute! I do that with Jude sometimes--the bowl is full, and he's even been eating out of it, but somehow he gets it into his head that he has to come get me and take me to the food bowl to show me...surprise...it's FULL 😸

They are so funny with all their little habits aren't they. Noogi almost always eats only the middle of his wet food, and needs me to scrape the bits on the edges back to the middle for him. He's lucky he is such a sweet boy as that is diva behaviour :ROFLMAO:

Interesting... I had to do this for Pete especially after his dental. But if he can get all the way around the bowl he just changes positions now to get it all! haha

Bandit was on Gabapentin for seizures in the last year of her life and she put on quite a bit of weight.

How much Gaba was Bandit on, Bhooma?
I had a chat to the vet today and he suggested I try a dose of 0.1ml (instead of 0.2ml). I'm going to give it a go but if it still over-stimulates his appetite I will be reluctant to carry on as I don't think he should get any rounder (he's already something of a round boy!).
I wouldn't say his arthritis is bad, but I reckon he is feeling a low level of discomfort, especially now the weather is colder, and is having some difficulty jumping up onto the sofa. I think he might have flare ups now and then as sometimes he is more sensitive about his lower back.

I like "round." So much gentler than other euphemisms ;)
Helen, does Noogi take a joint supplement? I think some here take Dasuquin, and I believe that Cosequin is also used for arthritis. (Jude is taking Cosequin for his FIC.)
You're wise to watch his weight, though, as obesity can aggravate arthritis as well as FD.

We started at 50mg BID and then upped it to 50mg TID and then 75mg TID!

I haven't caught up on previous threads, but is Noogi on Gaba for arthritis?
Hi Bhooma. Vet gave gabapentin for pancreatitis body pain last week and said he can continue on it to help his arthritis discomfort.

The gaba is the liquid formulation. I'm not sure how it compares to the mg (the internet says 50 mg/ml but I don't know if that is correct).
His first dose was 0.5ml which knocked him out completely (worryingly so). We then moved to 0.2ml which made his crazy hungry. On vet's advice I changed to 0.1ml last night, which he said is a tiny dose (so equivalent of 5mg might be right). It still made him hungry. Not all cats get hungry on it it seems, but I did find a study online that says for some cats it stimulates appetite similarly to mirtazapine.

I don't want him to be eating more than he is already, so I am not sure he should continue on gaba.

Vet did not have an immediate recommendation for a supplement to use instead.
Mary has suggested Dasuquin or Cosequin, but we don't seem to have those here.
I have done some hunting around and found this product: GCS Cat Omega Gel (Joint Care) - Advanced | Absolute Pets
Which I think has similar ingredients to those two recommendations?
Ingredients per pump (2ml)
Glucosamine HCL 300 mg
Chondroitin Sulphate 110 mg
MSM 100 mg
Omega-3 100 mg
Vitamin C 20 mg
Vitamin E 20 mg
Manganese sulphate 5 mg

I think I might give this a try and see how he fares on it?

I reduced Noogi's dose to 0.5ml when he wasn't eating with the p-titis and have stuck with it as he tolerated it so well. At some point I would like to see if Noogi might have another reduction. Maybe this time next week, if his numbers stay steady?

Does the bottle not tell you the strength in mg/ml? Can you ask the vet? Gaba will knock them out for the first week. Then their bodies get used to it and they will be fine. My civvie got 50mg twice a day for arthritis. She was on Meloxicam for a couple of years and it really made a huge difference to her mobility but stopped working, which is when we switched to Gaba. Joint supplements didn't really help her.

Yes, this has the main ingredients of joint supplements and you could try them. Maybe stop the gaba and see if the joint supplements help. Otherwise you won't know which of the two are working! :-)

I need to look at the bottle again. Vet did not warn me that the drowsiness might be a temporary thing!

Yes, this sounds like the best way forward. Thanks :D
