Pulling hair out. The balancing act is so tough. Good that she peed and ate. She ate too much MC, now she’s in yellow numbers, encroaching renal threshold. She ate ALOT last night, including some of her LC food, yay! She peed again overnight. Gave her Lantus 2 hours early this morning given where her AMPS is. She is also passing smelly gas. No bowel movement since the diarrhea episode 36-48 hours ago, but she was fairly empty. Will give her 4th of 12 metronidazole doses here in next 30 minutes. Hope to survive that with no drooling. I’ll put fortiflora on her food again but trying to wait to feed until her BG starts coming down. Fingers crossed we can stick to LC food today and get back to blue/green.

Hi Laura, it’s great to hear that Minner is eating!
I remember Ivy had really stinky poops when she had pancreatitis. It was really disgusting.
And I do also recall it it took a little while once things started to stabilize for her to poop again, like you were saying, so maybe she’s coming out of it. Paws crossed for that 🤞

I would think the higher carbs only stay in their system for just so long, so maybe the yellow numbers you were seeing are not strictly carb influenced.

Hopefully things will start to stabilize now that you have her eating again and the meds in her system to help her feel better.

Hope you both have a much better day today.
🤞❤️‍🩹😻

She has had no carbs today, but ate well at breakfast, 0% carb pate. Yet her insulin not behaving with the reduction strength we know its capable of ….. here is the evil of this disease. Many times there is nothing you can do but hope. She’s starving from the Mirataz, her BG is hovering at 200 line even smack in middle of insulin action time and has had zero carbs. I think once you lose control it’s not going to return to nice normal right away.

I’ve been doing reading on xanthan gum. That’s the thickener used in Tiki stix treats. I latched on to these treats because they are so low carb. Churu and Delectables and anything else that uses tapioca starch is not low carb and those treats will give BG spikes.

I started to lean on these Tiki stix too much in the mgmt of her curve. The salmon and the chicken/shrimp variety have 3-4% carbs in a 0.5oz 8-9kcal pouch. I was giving her sometimes up to 6 of these in a cycle, so over 10 a day in the past week. I am thinking this much fiber finally blew out her colon and that violent expression activated that reflex that causes vomiting too (she vomited within 15 seconds of her 2nd diarrhea bout). I don’t know … with vet telling me she doesn’t think its pancreatitis and me looking back and seeing how I may have OD’ed her on an ingredient known to cause digestive issues in larger quantities. Uggghhhhh.

I guess it doesn’t matter as I’ll never actually know, but I will be very mindful to use Tiki stix much more in moderation. Right now I need to get her back well below 200 and not starving from appetite stimulant.

Thank you so much Staci for sharing your wisdom and experience. Hoping I can get her back to well below 200 today but it seems to be struggling to really pull her down.

It’s good you’ve identified a potential cause, Laura!!
Hoping that cutting back on the product will make a big difference ❤️‍🩹

On a general cat board members were adamant that gums and thickeners were bad for cats' GI systems. There was a long thread on that. They're probably ok in moderation, like pretty much everything else. If they upset a cat's tummy, then probably best to not feed them.

Sending healing vines to Minner and hoping her pancreas will respond to the LC and gravitate back to those blues and greens it's been used to!

Happy cat Mother's Day, Laura!

Not sure the yellow was caused by overeating MC last night. Normally higher carbs just last a couple hours and she continued yellow today. I rather expect it was a dose reduction failure and some discomfort/inflammation caused by whatever (p'titis I expect). Don't withhold food when in higher numbers, just stick with LC. Girl needs to eat! I also wouldn't sweat the temporary yellows. You have the tools to counter them, which includes more insulin.

Speaking of insulin, shooting two hours earlier is not recommended. Typically it's just one hour one time and only for reds. Time for those patience pants!

I think I mentioned that metronidazole can really do a number on the tummy flora, which could be why the gas. Not my favourite med to give. I would add some probiotics, which is not Fortiflora. It is an appetite stimulant - it does not the the variety of probiotics needed, or enough. Some general info on probiotics here: Probiotics – IBDKitties

Thanks so much Wendy. This is really scary for me. Thank goodness for this community.

Her numbers keep rising. I reversed the tiny .125 reduction and employed the guidance of no less than 0.5 change when working above 5. So I went back to 6 units. She was at 6 for a long time but even that started requiring food frenzy so she had been stable at 5.75 for 3 weeks.

Do you think I should not use (discontinue) the Metronidazole? She’s had 5 of 12 doses now. I think its supposed to have anti-inflammatory effect in addition to killing certain things. I added fortaflora b/c I had it on hand while waiting for the type that Staci told me about to arrive. It arrived hours ago so I added to her food tonight. I found one called Nexabiotic for cats.

She is interested in eating her regular LC food again. This has been the case for 24 hours now … since giving her Mirataz. I don’t plan to give her more.

She had 2 diarrhea events, both Friday, both total liquid. About 3 hours apart. The 2nd one followed with vomiting within 15 seconds. That’s it — knock on wood. Rushed to vet. Started on metronidazole, cerenia, zofran the next day per this community recommendation. Then mirataz since she was not eating her regular food.

I assume I stick with 6.0 units now for 6 cycles and goto 6.5 if no green, or reduce if she drops below 50. I usually manage the lows with food so i’m more concerned about her continuing to rise.

I wouldn't stop the metronidazole, just add a much better probiotic. The one you got looks good.

Again, don't sweat the numbers tonight. Get some good sleep for yourself. Could also be New Dose Wonkiness. Take advantage of it.
