5/6 - Pookey 1-month OTJ

Hi all,

Yesterday’s post:
https://felinediabetes.org/fdmb//threads/5-5-pookey-ambg-na-pmbg-90.1/

If you exclude the trial, we’re coming up on 1 month OTJ! Overall things are good.

We have a home vet appointment this Friday for new labs. They want us to use Gabapentin one pill 3 hours before the visit. Never used it before so I hope that goes okay…

They also want to update his rabies vaccine. I’m not thrilled about it (just because why introduce a variable since he’s an indoor cat), but all my reading suggests the vaccine should be fine.

His legs have been clicking more, probably OA. But he still gets around fine. I joined that anti-Solensia Facebook group and oh man the stuff they’re claiming…

Have a great day!

- Tim

What a handsome guy, great pic! I hope the vet visit goes well.

Can't believe it's already been a month! Congratulations.

Petey is pretty unaffected by Gaba, just a little sleepy, but I also give a small amount. We use a liquid suspension that smells like cotton candy, apparently it's an artificial sweetener with little to no affect on his BG, that had me worried.

He was also forced to do rabies when I brought him in for his leg, I had the same concerns. So awful they force that!

Thanks Laurie. It’s encouraging to hear the things we’re doing are pretty standard procedure at least :giggle:

Gaba knocked Neko out so I stopped using it. I found putting on a full body harness like the Kitty Holster or Thundershirt helped calm her down. As did a little Rescue Remedy before hand and spraying the carrier with Feliway. Good luck with the vet visit.

Just to balance out the anti Solensia group, there are also good stories about it. My vet says it helps about 80% of cats. Luckily mine was one of them. She's on pred, and has been for 7 years now. We tried tapering it off, but her gut said "NO". Pred long term means osteoarthritis and osteopenia. Solensia has added a definite jump to her step. She can jump up on the bed once again and bounce up and down the stairs.

Thanks Wendy! That’s great that you had a positive experience. I know others here have too. I’m still wrapping my brain around which way to go, Adequan, Solensia, or something like CBD or fish oil. I’ll see what vet thinks too…

Bell has monthly Solensia injections. It is a bit hard for me to tell how effective it is, but she does seem to be moving better and she has totally stopped ripping out fur at the base of her tail. It is expensive tho.

Pookey is looking soooo good.

Thanks Seth - you were one of the ones I was thinking of. It must be nice to see her moving better. I worry they suffer in silence with that kind of movement pain…

Congratulations!
Oh, your post brings back memories, Bella "clicked" a lot, I actually loved it, I heard her come and go at night. It stopped fast with the treatment, the Dasuquin really helped. I am glad to read he is doing well (just read your post about the vet visit). Good luck with the urine catch :-)

Hi Cecile! Great to hear from you. That’s a great idea, I should talk to the vet about Dasuquin instead of Cosequin. Thanks for that! Anxiously waiting for results today…

She had Adequan injections (I did them with insulin syringes) once a month for a while first, it's the same drug. According to my vet it works better injected than orally. Losing weight also helped her a lot.

I remember you mentioning that, I think Adequan is my next step. I just don’t know when the right time to act is. Like he still gets around pretty good, does every movement he used to. But he clicks and generally moves a bit slower.

I don't know. Bella was at a point where she could not even stand on her back legs with her front onto something. Going up the stairs was hard, and she was in pain, she would growl if we touched her back or lower than her "waist" (whoch was not visible, she was very chubby then. A friend of my son called her "football cat"). Adequan worked amazingly well, but at the same time I made her run (I ran with her plate of food, she followed me, it helped a lot that she loved food so much!) and she slowly lost weight.
Maybe if he is still moving well, the oral form will work well?

I do that too with the food plate! It makes me happy to see them run, even if it’s just about the food.
