Looks like we have safely landed back on earth today.

I talked to his vet about switching to the pens, and she was totally on board! However, there was a bit of confusion at the pharmacy, so I ended up getting a vial refilled this time—not a big deal. The price is the same for both the pens and the vial at my little local pharmacy, so it didn’t really matter. They give us a great deal on both.

That said, I do think the pens will be better overall, especially when it comes to avoiding issues with expired insulin. I told the pharmacy not to worry about it for now and just gave the go-ahead for the vial this time—but I did ask them to make sure the next few refills are for the pens.

Honestly, I just really wanted to get him started on the new insulin because I had a strong feeling the old stuff was making his levels spike these past few days. And after today's numbers, I think we have seen some improvement with the new insulin.

Anyways, I hope all the sugar kitties are surfing safely today!

I just had my vet call in a refill for pens too. No idea how to use them but when you mentioned it the other day I decided it was time to try as well.

Use the pens just like a bottle: insert needle into rubber stopper, draw out insulin. Don't inject air or extra insulin into the pen. That's a good way to ruin the entire pen. Handle the pen with extreme care.

So you get one shot to draw out the correct amount without bubbles?

If you don't get enough insulin out it's ok to poke the needle back in and draw out a little more. Same with a bottle. Just don't push air or insulin back in. Do that before you stick the needle back in if you somehow didn't draw out enough the first time. Or just draw up a little more insulin than you need to account for the air you need to push out. Say your dose is 2 units. Draw out about 3 units. There'll be a bubble in the syringe. Remove needle from pen and remove the bubble and any extra insulin however you normally do it. You do waste a tiny drop of insulin.
