Hi all,

Previous:
5/29 - Pookey - Small update

Our first 4 pee day since December of last year… all good size, and the day is not even over… Weird too because I’ve been doing less water in his food recently because he hasn’t been as food motivated as he has been.

@Mary & Jude I know you’ve dealt with UTIs, does Jude urinate more frequently when he has one? Anything else to look out for?

Well, a hallmark characteristic of UTIs is more frequent peeing and smaller sized clumps. It's a hallmark characteristic, but it's not Jude's symptom. Jude licks his urinary area, and he has peed outside the box, but he's sort of asymptomatic most of the time (which is a problem). Other symptoms can be straining in the box--going to the box frequently (because nothing is coming out--which is super dangerous because that can mean a blockage). I had a cat once that would cry when trying to urinate, and I always knew he had a UTI.

Have you changed his food? Is it possible that he's eating something that is more diuretic for him?

Just different FF flavors, so idk.

His appetite hasn’t been great, which is new for us. I’ve had to spoon feed a few times a day this week. Which could be any number of minor things that I’m still troubleshooting.

I’m going to grab a BG test tonight…

Spoon feed? That's really unusual for him, isn't it? How long has this been going on?
Listen, I'm always quick to get them checked out when they are what I characterize as "just ain't right." And, honestly, that approach has never been one I've regretted because cats are so adept at hiding illness/pain.

Yes, he’s never missed a snack up until this. This started on 5/29.

Some things I’m thinking about:
  • Too much water in food
  • Bowl or plate issue
  • Temperature of food
  • Sick of same flavor he’s had for 6 months
  • P-itis but he’s still eating for the most part
  • This is what normal cat hunger level looks like?
  • Beginning of another ailment

Really hope it’s just a blip and that Pookey’s okay Tim. Does he seem nauseous or lethargic? Any other behaviour changes? Have you tried food toppers to entice him with his food?

Thanks Kat! I think he’s good otherwise, just sleepy. Good idea about the toppers I have not tried that yet. I have fortiflora that I’ve never used before…

Trixie loves fortiflora. Guaranteed to get her to eat if she’s not feeling it for some reason. I only use when she’s being fussy so she thinks it’s a treat.

Good luck if you give that a try, hope it works for him.

"Beginning of another ailment" made me chuckle. Always something! But I hope not!

Esse is big about getting sick of flavors. That's one of the reasons we switched to Fancy Feast originally (before he was officially diagnosed)--most 'nicer' foods he eventually rejects so why spend money just to have a bunch leftover. The boxes of FF pates we get have 3 flavors so I actually load them into the cabinet in such a way that each can is a new flavor from the one before, which has helped us avoid this issue. For a guy who used to eat trash he's actually pretty picky.

I know, right lol. When he gets sick of one does he refuse it entirely? And can you ever come back to them? I’ve got cases of novel protein food I was trying to get him to eat with no luck. So I feel you on that…

Some of them he refused entirely, some of them he would sniff and walk away but eventually eat (hours later) once he got hungry enough. Thankfully this was happening before he was diabetic so I was never worried about him being off his usual food schedule. We never tried coming back to the old foods (would usually 'donate' the extras to friends with less-picky cats) but with treats he formerly liked/now rejects I will periodically try again and it does seem permanent. I've got like 6 half empty bags of various freeze-dried protein treats that I suppose are just snacks for me now, lol.

Hi Tim, just saw this post. Sorry I missed it earlier. I hope Pookey is getting back to his normal pee routine.
It doesn’t look like his pee is increased on a daily basis on his spreadsheet.
Did you say the vet is coming for a visit soon?

Were you getting a pee sample for a urinalysis? Did that all happen?
Hope all is well with your boy ❤️‍🩹💕🐈❤️‍🩹💕🐈

Thanks for checking in, Staci! Vet is coming the last week of June to check his blood pressure (and his small lump on his leg). I guess that’s something they wanted to do last time but didn’t for whatever reason…

Yep urinalysis is done - the USG was borderline too low.

Thankfully, the 4 pee day seems to be an outlier. Cats I guess…

Ok good, glad to hear it was an outlier!
Keep us posted on the vet visit and Pookey’s antics 😻🐈💕
