Last Post

I am starting to slowly comb through the IAA posts and info. Looks like we are in for a lot of being all over the place with numbers and then (hopefully) one day a magic drop will appear.

First things first, it also seems like I should schedule a dental. Egon's teeth are pretty bad and that looks to help.

I will check in with questions as I have them as I read through the IAA posts. Thank you!

I saw Jack's dental make a difference. It's stressful and requires a lot of pre-planning and discussion with the vet due to anesthesia and insulin and food, but worth it in the end. I definitely relied on the more experienced members here for advice & support, and it definitely made the difference! HUGS!

I am sure I will have lots of questions about the dental! I did see this chart in Bell's post.

So based on this, if his normal meal and dose is at 8:30am and they start seeing dentals at 7:30am on the day of surgery, I need to creep his meal and shot up to 5:30am and ask for him to be the first dental of the day?

I have a dental booked with Binx this Friday, so I can let you know what I learn after all is done! For feeding, his normal meal time is 7am, his dental is 8:30/9:00am and he’s getting a small snack at 5:00am, with insulin at regular time (7am). He’s also only getting 1/4 but that’s just what my vet has asked for.

Good luck whatever you decide! 😊

Jude's vet gave me specific instructions for him, and they were similar to what Briana posted above.

Ask your vet what their instructions are for dentals and fasting. Not all vets are up to date with the latest recommendations and I wouldn't want to surprise them. No harm sharing the document though.

If his numbers are high enough, no need to move shot time up that much. Neko was allowed 1/3 of a meal until 6:00 AM, but shot time was 7:30, dental visit was after that. I gave her meal at +10.5 and shot the half dose at +12. Or +12.5 if her numbers were lower and I was worried about shooting low with carb influenced numbers. The dental vet did all his exams first, followed by surgeries later. But they also monitored BG's. Asking for first surgery of the day is good, also take in some of his food so he can eat when he's awake again.

Jack was allowed regular food & insulin the night before, and 1/2 insulin dose and small food morning of surgery. He ate at 5am though since vet is a 2 hr drive. Like Wendy said, vets vary based on their experience/comfort/education so talk it over with them. Will be thinking positive thoughts and praying for you guys! 🙏 🩷

I’d love to learn all I can from your experience. Thank you!
