Hi all! I posted this in senvelgo forum as well! Just reposting her in case anyone can help. Need some advice.
My fur baby Bonita was prescribed Senvelgo for her diabetes diagnosis. Her diet was switched to low carb 5 days before we started. Yesterday morning was her first dose. I actually gave her a little more than half the recommended dosage for her weight as I am very cautious. Her BG beforehand was 374, 4 hours later her BG was 215 and her blood ketone level was 0.3.
This morning, after a fast overnight, her BG was at 180 (yay), but her ketones are now at 0.9. I am hesitant to give her the second dosing (and definitely have no intention of giving her more than half. She does have a vet appt tomorrow evening as well.
Any help is appreciated!
Kathy

I'm replying here since the Health forum gets more traffic.

It sounds like you're using a ketone meter. If you're using a urine test strip and reporting the "numbers" from the strip, it's best to post the size of the ketones. The urine test strips don't give an accurate numerical reading in the same way that the blood ketone meters do. If you're using a blood ketone meter, do check the user manual for what is considered a significant level. Typically, what you're reporting is well within the safety level.

It's good you're keeping an eye on ketone levels. It's the one thing that will mean that Senvelgo should be discontinued. I'm assuming you saw the post on the Senvelgo forum that advises what labs need to be done in order to ensure your cat is responding well or if Bonita needs to be on insulin.

Thank you ! I tested again at 1130 and ketones were down to 0.4 and blood sugar up to 240 (she ate breakfast so im assuming that would cause it to rise). Just administered the second (half) dosage and will check her later in the day again!

I would also suggest adding water to your cat's food. Hydration may be important given how the SGLT-2s work in cats.

Please make sure you're feeding Bonita a low carb food. If you're feeding her a diabetic prescription food, it doesn't mean it's low carb. Please let us know if you need food resources. We consider low carb as. under 10% but most of our members feed their cat in the 5% range.

Thank you ! And yes she is a kibble girl but I found Dr. Elseys dry food and she will have a couple packets of broth a day
