5/7 - Xander | AMPS 278 | Question about high Gabapentin doses

It's been quite a morning for us here. Xander woke me up for his breakfast while I was dreaming, so I was very out of it. This is when we give him his Gabapentin (75 mg) in preparation for injection a few hours later. Usually my partner gives him this meal because they're often already up, but if they aren't I do it. I was so out of it that I forgot to put a note that it was done on the whiteboard like I normally would, which meant when my partner was up shortly later, they also gave him his breakfast and meds. So he's up to 150mg at this point.

He was originally prescribed 100mg twice/day but I didn't like how sedated it made him, so I cut it down to 50. When he started to seem more anxious with injections, I upped it to 75mg and that's been perfect. So I know 200mg total daily is fine, because that's what his original prescription was. I'm curious if anyone has any experience with anything above that though? Tonight he's getting his Libre replaced so he'll need his full dosage even more then normal (of course). Will 225mg total today be safe? 25 isn't much more than 200, so I'd think it'd be okay for one day.

As of right now he's just way more sleepy than usual and otherwise seems fine. My frantic Googling finds a lot of results that basically say 300 is very high and he may forget he even exists for like 12 hours but will be fine because Gabapentin has such a wide margin of safety.

I did leave a message with the vet but not sure when/if they'll get back to me in time.

Hope everyone's having an uneventful, safe day.

Oh boy!! Sleepy Xander  So glad the vet was able to get back to you in time and that he’ll be okay for his evening libre change.
I’d say hope you have a calm night, but I’m guessing he will be fast asleep. Hope he’s back to life tomorrow! These things happen, we do the best we can with so many variables and steps on the go.

Thank you, Briana! It's been quite a day for us lol I'm glad I'm the only one who does the insulin because doubling up on that would've been catastrophic. 😬

Glad the vet got back to you and Xander has a nice relaxing day. 🤗.

The other day in my morning stupor I was a split second away from giving 4.5u 😳! Sleep hasn't been great and I'm grateful for my routine of multiple checks but I almost didn't catch it. Blurry mornings are rough!

Oh no!! I'm so glad you caught it but that would haunt me too! Those kinds of mornings really are rough. 😩 It's so scary how easily it could go very, very wrong.

In the last year of her life, Bandit started getting seizures for which the vet prescribed Gaba (she reacted very badly to Phenobarbital). We started her on 50mg of Gaba BID and slowly increased her dose from 50 mg BID to 75 mg TID (225 mg per day).

I'm so sorry, I never got a notification for this for some reason. Thank you, Bhooma! I appreciate the input.
