5/21 - Pookey - Urine Results

Hi all,

Previous post:
https://felinediabetes.org/fdmb//threads/5-13-pookey-new-lab-values.181/

Just got the urine test results back.

Urine specific gravity is 1.025.

It says urine creatinine is 166 mg/dL but that's got to be a typo, right? If it's supposed to be mmol/L, that converts to 1.88 mg/dL which is more in line with what I'd expect. Unless there is a different creatinine range for urine tests?

Urine protein/creatinine ratio is 0.1.

Vet says he is Stage 2 kidney disease and is suggesting renal diet and Hydracare which is all new to me. I just want to make sure I fully understand before I go crazy lol.

She is comfortable with a dental cleaning based on his current state, so I'm going to look into scheduling that.

Appreciate any of your thoughts or guidance. I am dreading the deep dive into CKD...

Edit: I’ve signed up for Tanya’s Group…

Oh, no! Sweet Pookey! I hate to hear that he has CKD! One of my previous cats had it; he lived to be 19--was probably diagnosed around Pookey's age. He also had thyroid disease. We actually made very few changes with him in terms of food, etc., because he hated the renal diet. I think we might have tried phosphorous binders? I can't remember. Toward the end of his life, like the last year, we gave him sub-q fluids every couple of days (which are not difficult to administer). CKD is certainly no where near as difficult to understand as FD. Tanya's Group is immensely helpful, as are the FB groups. Give that boy some lovins' from Jude and I.

Will do! Thank Mary. The initial feedback from a member on Tanya's is that the phosphorus is still at a healthy level, so just something to monitor for now. I know he would hate the renal food too...

Glad to see Jude was safe today while you were gone. Seems like leaving the HC was a wise decision!

Sorry about the diagnosis, Tim. I agree with Mary in that much more manageable than FD.
Ivy was also diagnosed years ago but since she’s hyperthyroid I don’t actually know her current stage.
The CKD was when I began to cook for her either recipes created for her situation. Then it was tweaked to lower carb when FD came along.
I had a previous cat with CkD and she lived to be 18. I also gave fluids (more frequently over time). She was a very easy and manageable cat, unlike our current loon, my sweet girl, Ivy 😻

You’ll do great as you are on top of everything. Glad you joined Tanya’s Group.

Sending you both extra hugs as you navigate all of this new information 😻❤️‍🩹🐈

Nope! Is that their ultra-low phos one? I'm assuming you don't want to go too low on phosphorus either.
I'd like to find something lower in phosphorus than FF, for sure. The thing that always seems to me to be a problem with foods other than FF is that I don't trust myself with determining the carb values. And I'm not sure about the Weruva WX Phos. They've just started carrying it at my local Pet Smart, so I've thought about get a can or two and seeing it it flies with Jude. Do you know if it's LC?

She is a sweet girl 😊 thanks Staci. You're exactly right, it's just information overload right now. It's great to hear you and Mary both had cats that got along well.

Check out the Andrew Hall chart in Food Charts and ctrl f for Weruva Wx. Then the the ME % for carbs. That sheet is nice because he updates it pretty often.

Well that stinks, ugh! Sorry you have to navigate that as well.

I still haven't made any changes for Pete yet, one thing at a time. I just donated a bunch of food this afternoon, the Weruva Phos was one of them. What was concerning is it says right on it that it's not a complete diet??

I used hydracare for Pete and swear it kept him healthy enough that we didn't get his FD diagnosis till late. He looooved that stuff. I since stopped cause wasn't sure about the glycerine and guar gum.

🤗
